Power station, Dawson Falls

This small timber building houses one of the world’s oldest operating hydroelectric generators. Orgininally built to power the famous Wellington cable-car, it was later used by the navy before being brought to Dawsons Falls, on the slopes of Mt Taranaki, to power the guest house. Expansion of the national grid has rendered it unnecessary now, but it is maintained for historical reasons, and emits a lovely constant whirring noise.
