Parliament House, Wellington

Parliament House, Wellington. New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy, like the Commonwealth of Australia and the Australian States. Like Queensland, it has only one house of parliament. The capital was in Auckland for a long time during the 19th Century, but was moved to afford better communication with the South Island.

The main building (originally built in 1922) is incomplete, and the round building beside it is a modern addition that is widely criticised for its ugliness. I have heard of a suggestion of moving the “Beehive” further back to enable completion of the older building. There is a precedent for moving such large buildings in Wellington — a multi-story hotel was moved across Cable Street to make way for the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of NZ by the harbour front. But as they spent $175m in the 1990s renovating the older buildings, it is unlikely to happen.
